What We Believe

John Wesley and the early Methodists placed primary emphasis on Christian living, on putting faith and love into action. This emphasis on what Wesley referred to as "practical divinity" has continued to be a hallmark of United Methodism today. Lake Winola UMC strives to live into this call of putting love into action.

We are a Trinitarian church, meaning that we as United Methodists believe that there is one God who eternally exists as three distinct Persons — the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Stated differently, God is one in essence and three in person. We believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, who took on flesh to live among humanity as one of us. He called us, showed us the way of truth, and then died for us. We believe that Jesus Christ was resurrected from the dead, and ascended into Heaven to sits at the right hand of the Father. We believe that this work of Christ was the work of salvation, forgiving our sins and defeating death's hold on us.

If you find this confusing, do not worry, you are in good company. The concepts of The Holy Trinity, salvation, and resurrection are deep mysteries that the Church has been wrestling with for thousands of years. Faith in God is a matter of believing even though we do not have a full understanding. Everyone experiences doubt and we all wrestle with God at times in our lives. Here at Lake Winola UMC we are not interested in judging where you are in your own walk with God. We encourage you to wrestle with the hard questions that life provokes, and we encourage you to study as much as you feel comfortable. These are some of the many topics that we work to understand better in community both in worship, and in small groups. We are thankful for those who ask questions and pursue God relentlessly!

We believe that being faithful means surrendering to Jesus Christ our Lord in our whole being, and trusting in a future grounded in His good will. We believe that our God is good, and wants what is good to be revealed within us, so that we can be sent out into the world to be God's hands and feet revealing and participating in God's good will towards all of creation. We are called to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

We may all have things in our pasts that we are not always proud of, but we also have amazing gifts that can be shared in community to help us become better people together. Here at Lake Winola UMC we encourage one another to seek God, and to live into those gifts that God has given us. We believe that sharing our gifts with one another and the community is essential to Christian living.

Lake Winola UMC is a non judgmental congregation. We are open and affirming of our LGBTQIA+ sisters and brothers. Everyone is welcome, and loved, here.

We look forward to exploring life with one another!
